The University of Portsmouth provides higher education to 23,000 students from over 130 countries.  One of just four universities in the south east to be rated as Gold in Teaching Excellence in 2017 and in the top forty best UK universities according to The Guardian University Guide 2018, it employs over 3,000 staff and has a turnover of £230 million.  At an exciting stage of development, the University has defined a new vision that maps out its ambitions as a leading modern university.  Key to that vision is supporting and developing their people to deliver an excellent student experience, inspirational education and world-class research and innovation.

The Deputy HR Director – People Services will lead the transformation of the HR operational service to create a true ‘hub’ for all HR transactional activity, following a recent independent review of the HR service.  Reporting to the Director of Human Resources who is a member of the University Executive Board and working alongside the Deputy HR Director – Organisational Development, this role will ensure the HR service is aligned to the needs of the University and the priorities of the People Strategy.  The remit is to provide leadership and management in the delivery of an effective and efficient HR service that consistently supports organisational performance.

Leading a large team including the HR Service Centre, HR Systems and Business Improvement and Occupational Health, you will be experienced in successfully leading and engaging teams to enable change as well as understanding how technology and system integration can drive service excellence.  You will have the drive, experience and professional credibility to deliver quality HR services within an environment that fosters high achievement within a community of learning.

The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate key attributes including HR leadership, building relationships with key stakeholders and managing HR information and data to ensure compliance. Experience of leading HR teams and delivering an operational HR service is essential along with a track record of transformation in a complex, unionised environment.  Additionally, experience of upskilling staff while improving business processes is highly desirable.

In person, the ability to influence, commit to excellence in service delivery, communicate effectively and provide well developed organisational skills will be backed up by chartered membership of the CIPD and a degree level education.

To apply for this exciting opportunity, please forward a covering letter and full CV detailing your experience and relevant achievements pertaining to this role along with your current or most recent package details to Jennifer.gaster@hrheads.co.uk.
